Industrial Ecology

IE addresses questions like: How can we make change and move towards more sustainable industrial systems that have optimal material flows? How to understand material and energy flows in industrial systems? How to identify innovations resulting in closing material and energy cycles? How to establish priorities for decision-making? What are the implications of local and regional differences for global systems analysis and policy making?

Understanding these questions fundaments important sustainability oriented innovations for the circular economy. Examples of IE applications for industry involve the design of waste recycling alternatives, the design of sustainable products and services, analyses of footprints, industrial symbiosis, sustainable business model developments, among others. For policy-makers, IE guides understanding of sustainable consumption and production patterns and policy design for industrial networks or regional systems such as cities and nations. Examples include innovative policies such as extended producer responsibility, material taxes, and incentives for collaborative action.

The International Society of Industrial Ecology (ISIE) represents the leading group of academic researchers, industrial leaders and policy makers interested in the field. ISIE promotes the use of industrial ecology in research, education, policy, community development, and industrial practices. Along its 15 years of existence, ISIE has build a community that pursue cumulative learning, produce quality research, and promote social change.

To strengthen industrial ecology discussions and activities in this region, ISIE will hold its first-ever regional meeting for North and South America in Bogota, Colombia.
